Urban India’s annual plastic waste generation stands at 5.6 million tonnes, of the total waste generated by the urban centers 68% is collected and a meager 28% is processed. Our cities are home to a huge network of waste pickers all of who work in the informal sector. These wastepickers collect and segregate waste so that it can be recycled, therefore, reducing the stress on our landfills. This is done for a small amount of money that they make by selling recyclable materials to small waste handlers. Even though they play such a crucial role in our cities they get almost no credit and no representation.
